This morning (as a part of some client follow-up that I promised) I wrote the following…
Be here, now. Be PRESENT.
It sounds great but how do we actually do that?
The key is BREATH–consciously breathing. I am serious enough about it that I have it tattooed on the back of my neck.
Try this: When you read this, sit up tall, roll your shoulders back and take a nice deep breath. Inhale through your nose (a breath through the nose is warming, and often deeper than breathing through your mouth.) Inhale for 5 counts, hold it one count then release it for 7 counts. (It helps if you count.)
Try that a few times. As you do it stay aligned (i.e., sitting up straight.) Then take a sticky note and put it on your screen, or send yourself (or one of your colleagues) a reminder to breathe. Make it a recurring message.
The key message here is: Don’t forget to breathe.
It’s that simple, but it’s not always easy.
You all work in a very fast-paced world, tension can run high, deadlines need to be met. The way to stay flexible and build in some yielding energy is to breathe.
And even though the original post was written on April Fool’s Day–I am not kidding. BREATHE!
